ARSONISTS triggered an explosion at a disused school
22 Feb 2007 ARSONISTS triggered an explosion at a disused school, causing a fire that left the building completely gutted.
On Monday afternoon 35 firefighters tackled 50ft flames at the former Clewborough House School in Guildford Road, Mytchett. Smoke could be seen more than a mile away after the 40-year-old derelict prefabricated building caught fire when a seat, piled with items and topped with a Calor gas bottle, exploded.
The fire was reported by an off-duty Surrey police officer who was driving past the school at 2.37pm. It took fire crews until 5pm to get the blaze under control. The last appliance did not leave until 7.45pm.
A rescue dog was used to check nobody was trapped inside and a helicopter later joined the operation. Source: Get Surrey
