Councillor Joanne Potter became the new mayor of Surrey Heath after being elected at the Surrey Heath Borough Council Annual Meeting on 20 May 2015.
Born in Frimley, Councillor Potter grew up locally and has been a councillor for the Mytchett and Deepcut ward since 2011. She was last year’s Deputy Mayor for Surrey Heath.
Councillor Potter has served on various committees, such as the Community Services Scrutiny Committee, the Performance and Audit Scrutiny Committee, Licensing Committee and the Camberley Theatre Working Group.
Councillor Potter’s career has included the entertainment industry as a performer in pantos and summer magic act shows, plus running a successful pub / restaurant / music venue. She currently works at her father’s Surrey-based leisure and entertainment business.
At the mayor making ceremony, Councillor Potter was sworn in as Mayor of Surrey Heath for the ensuing year, receiving the Mayoral robe and chain of office. Councillor Potter succeeds Bob Paton who carried out duties as Mayor of Surrey Heath during the past year.
While undertaking various visits and events throughout her mayoral year, Councillor Potter will be escorted by her sister, Mrs Jackie Piper.
The Mayor will be raising money for her chosen charities, which are Alzheimer Café Camberley, Sebastian's Action Trust and Parity for Disability.
Cllr Potter "hopes to raise as much as possible for these worthy causes". She said: “It’s such a huge honour to have been elected as Mayor of Surrey Heath. I’m looking forward to connecting with the whole community and will try my absolute best to be of service to the people of the borough wherever I can.”
