Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Why not buy one extra gift this year and donate it to our Christmas Challenge for Challengers gift appeal? We are supporting Challengers' Farnham play scheme that provides activities for children and young people with disabilities

Get Hampshire is asking readers to spare one gift to give less fortunate children a slightly merrier Christmas this year.

The Christmas Challenge for Challengers is officially under way, in support of Challengers – a charity that provides play schemes for children and young people with disabilities in Farnham.

Guildford-based Challengers opened its Farnham play scheme in 2007 in St James Avenue. It provides a two-storey play area and cooking and dining facilities, as well as an art room to encourage creativity and a multi-sensory room with lights and sounds controlled by touch.

There is also a quiet room for stories and all-important cuddles.

Sessions are run after school, at weekends and during school holidays, and sleepovers are even possible.

Because Challengers is one of the only providers of leisure for disabled children, many families travel for up to an hour to access them, meaning the benefits are felt across the Hampshire-Surrey border.

Not only does the charity provide an exciting place for children, it also provides a much-needed break for parents and carers.

All this makes Challengers the ideal charity for Get Hampshire to support.

Challengers head of fundraising Jessica Oliver said: " Challengers can’t always spend lots of money on toys and games for schemes, as our focus is always on raising enough funds to keep the schemes open and staffed with highly trained and experienced play and youth workers, to enable disabled children with any impairment to attend.

"Having some lovely gifts to pass to the children and also use in the schemes this Christmas would be fantastic, and help make Christmas at Challengers even more special and exciting than ever before."

Unwrapped gifts can be dropped off until the end of Thursday December 4 and will be wrapped and given to the children at the Challengers Christmas party .

Suggested present ideas include role play toys and dressing up costumes, puzzles, arts and crafts, toy cars, colouring stationery, chocolate and sweets, board games, DVDs, CDs, nail varnish and lip balm for girls and cook books.
